A trip with an electric car: how to plan the charging stops
A good plan is a few charging stops you trust, with a reserve at each.
Plan the stops, not just the route
Start from the distance between fast chargers, not from the total length of the trip. Choose stops where your car can use the plug and the power, and where there are several charge points, so one that is busy or broken does not end your trip.
Keep a reserve
Do not plan to arrive on an empty battery. Try to reach each stop with at least 10 to 20 per cent, and with more in the cold, at high speed or in the mountains, because all of these raise consumption.
Charge to 80 per cent
On a DC charger the first 80 per cent of the battery goes much faster than the last 20. Two short stops are often quicker than one long one. Move on as soon as you have enough for the next leg plus your reserve.
Plan the route in the app
Enter your maximum range at a full battery in the GeoCharge profile, then choose to plan a trip. The app builds a route with charging stops. Check the charge points it suggests and keep one nearby as a backup.
